SHELBY DEVORE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior on the Tigers' women's golf team, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 29, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics while also serving their campus and community.

The Woodlands, Texas, resident has distinguished herself in all of those areas.

She was part of a fundraising effort for the ALS Foundation and was captain of Leigh’s Believers. As a member of Trinity’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, DeVore participated in Change for the Better, where funds were collected for the Red Cross.

DeVore has also volunteered for San Antonio Sports, at San Antonio’s Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children and helped run the golf camp for Kinetic Kids. She also has been a counselor at Camp Olympia, in Trinity, Texas, while mentoring children in a variety of sports activities.

Last fall, DeVore and her women’s golf teammates launched a fundraising drive titled “Holeing Out for Harvey.” The effort was in response to the devastating effects Hurricane Harvey had on the Texas Gulf Coast. The team asked for pledges for each of their birdies (1-under-par) in the fall tournaments and were able to raise over 5,000 dollars.

DeVore majors in communication at Trinity with minors in communication management and sport management. An outstanding student, DeVore has qualified for Trinity’s Dean’s List and the SCAC Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, DeVore was selected for the 2017 SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

On the golf course, DeVore has contributed to the Tigers’ two consecutive SCAC Championships. She has earned All-SCAC honors in each of her years of competition. Last season, DeVore finished in a tie for third place and made the All-SCAC First Team. In 2016, DeVore was a sixth-place finisher and was a Second Team recipient. Following the 2015 campaign, DeVore placed third and was named SCAC Freshman of the Year, as well as securing a slot on the All-SCAC First Team.
