NATHAN HAYWOOD
OF BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE, a junior
from Fairhope, Ala., has been selected the SCAC Character &
Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending
October 2, 2011.
Haywood, a chemistry major at Birmingham-Southern
College and a defender on the men’s soccer team,
volunteers at Church of the Reconciler, serving breakfast to the
homeless. He is also a worship assistant for ‘The
Gathering’, and is involved in the Trinity United Methodist
Church youth group where he leads bible study.
He has also worked with a Costa Rican ministry called Amor en la
Calle (“Love in the Streets”), in which homeless
teenagers can live and work on a ranch, learning to be
self-sufficient.
In the classroom, Haywood holds a 4.0 GPA and
received the 2010 CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award, and is
also a Guy E. Snavely Honors Scholar at BSC. He presented research
on atmospheric chemistry at the 2010 Southeast Medical Scientist
Symposium, and is also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC).
