The 17th-ranked Mountaineers were dominant from start to finish,
shooting rounds of 291, 291 and 284 to shatter the SCAC's previous
three-round scoring record by 17 strokes. The record had been held
by Oglethorpe University who went on to win the 2012 NCAA Division
III men's national title later that season.
For two days, the Schreiner team took its cue from junior Zach
Oliver, who blistered the Tapatio Springs course with a SCAC record
three-round total of 208 to finish eight strokes under par and earn
2014 SCAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Year honors. Three other Schreiner
golfers earned All-SCAC honors. Junior Cheyne Kendall tied for
second with a three-day score of 218 and joined Oliver on the
All-SCAC First Team while sophomore Phillip Stewart tied for
seventh (220) and earned Second Team recognition. Freshman Matthew
McClung earned Honorable Mention honors and was also named the 2014
SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year.
Trinity University outdueled Southwestern University by five
strokes (887 to 892) for second place. The 22nd-ranked Tigers were
led by First-Team All-SCAC honoree senior Tyler Lehmann who tied
for second for individual honors with a three-day total of 218.
Southwestern was third in the team standings behind the First Team
All-SCAC performance of junior Jordan Cowart. Cowart fired a
three-day total of 218 to finish among four golfers tied for
second.
Rounding out the standings, Centenary College finished fourth
(897), Texas Lutheran University was fifth (900) and the University
of Dallas (1133) finished sixth.
Several SCAC schools and individuals now await a possible bid to
the NCAA Division III Championships, to be held May 13-16 at
Howey-in-the Hills, Florida.
