Austin College Wins a Five-Set Thriller over Schreiner to Take Fifth Place at SCAC Volleyball Tourney

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Austin College pulled out an exciting 3-2 victory over Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in the fifth/sixth place match of the 2013 SCAC Volleyball Tournament. Interactive Bracket | Official Website | Photo Gallery | Austin College Postgame Interview

The teams also played two five-set thrillers during the regular season, and this one was another battle to the very end. Austin won a decisive 25-16 set to open the match, then Schreiner fought off a late rally by the ‘Roos to take a 27-25 win to tie things 1-1. 

Austin was back on top with a 25-21 win in the third, but the Mountaineers hit a blistering .433 in set four to take a 25-17 win. In the fifth, Austin was finally able to pull away with a 19-17 set to finish off the victory. 

Shelby Eaves posted 19 kills and 24 digs for a standout double-double, while Alyse Magnuson also had a strong showing with 31 assists and 22 digs. Madison Lee added 18 digs for the ‘Roos, while Rachel Fusselman led all players with 38 digs. Alyssa Pruett chipped in with 10 digs, while Reygan Holloman finished with five blocks.

Brittany Boyett, Callie Du Perier, and Jaemi Groves had double-doubles in the loss for Schreiner as well. Boyett finished with 12 kills and 16 digs, and also recorded a pair of aces. Groves scored 51 assists along with her 14 digs in the match. Du Perier had 10 kills and 16 digs for the Mountaineers, while Jamie Burns finished with a stellar 36 digs. Veronica Castillo had 10 blocks and nine kills, and Lauren Prukop posted eight total blocks.
