KAITLYNN COPHER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior first baseman from Tomball, Texas, has been named the SCAC Softball Player of the Week for games played from Monday, February 24 through Sunday, March 1.
Copher sparked the Pirates to a 3-2 record last week that included a split with non-confernce for Mary Hardin-Baylor and an opening SCAC series win against Trinity on the road, improving to 9-4 overall on the season. Copher went 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate with five RBI, four runs scored, two walks, a double, registering an RBI in each contest, including driving in the winning run in the seventh in the Pirates’ 4-3 win over UMHB last Wednesday.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore pitcher Bri Wodtke of Schreiner went 10-for-23 at the plate last week, with five RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and a double to help lead the Mountaineers to a perfect 5-0 record including an SCAC opening series sweep of Austin College. Junior outfielder Kelly Jurden of Texas Lutheran hit .667 in a three-game road series sweep at University of Dallas. Jurden had a hit in all three games, and she stole four bases in the series. Jurden's first steal of the series was her 101st as a Bulldog, breaking the school record for career steals. Jurden scored a total of five runs. Junior shotstop Brianna Pena of Trinity hit .556 (5-9) with three RBI as the Tiger softball team opened SCAC play with a 1-2 record against Southwestern.
