LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Eight of nine Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's cross country teams opened their 2019 seasons over the Labor Day weekend.

Five teams were in action on Friday with the Southwestern men off and running first. The Pirates earned a second-place finish at the Concordia (Texas) Tornado Watch Invitational on Friday morning. Freshman Noah Dennis wasted no time making his mark in his first collegiate race posting a race-winning time of 16:42 and averaging 5:22 a mile across the 5k course. Later that evening, Schreiner posted a fourth-place finish at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational. Freshman Marco Hernandez navigated the 4k course in a time of 14:11.31 - good for 13th place in the 40 runner field. Senior John Jacob placed 11th with a time of 21:55.3 to lead the Johnson & Wales University men in their 2019 season opener Friday night at the 4-mile Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. Trinity and Texas Lutheran kicked off their seasons at the UIW Opener, held at Classic Elites Soccer Complex. The Tigers finished in fifth, led by junior Keaton Holt who finished in 19th place in the men's 6k event, with a time of 19:30.5 that left him a mere 0.04 seconds behind the UIW runner. Texas Lutheran, who ran just four runners and did not score, were paced by first-year Israel Olivarez who navigated the course in a time of 22:45.6.

The University of St. Thomas had its scheduled Friday meet - the Texas A&M Opener - cancelled due to weather.

On Saturday, Austin College and the University of Dallas met for the inaugural CROOSader Dual Meet in Sherman. The 'Roo men took top honors, led by a first-place finish from sophomore RJ Navarro, who came in with a time of 10:53.0 in the 2-mile race. Dallas was led by freshman Thomas Lagarde who finished in 11:04.9 in his collegiate debut. The Colorado College men opened the 2019 season Saturday at the 10,000-foot Invite in Leadville, Colo., hosted by Colorado Mountain College. Seniors Tony Calderon and Max Blackburn finished first and second, respectively, in the 8K meet. Calderon posted a time of 29:41, while Blackburn finished in 30:25.
