LUIS BENCOMO OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior midfielder from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, October 13th.
Bencomo had a hand in every goal the Celts scored last weekend as St. Thomas posted a perfect 2-0 record on the road and moved into a tie at the top of the standings following the second full week of SCAC play. In the 1-0 win over Trinity, Bencomo buried the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to hand the Tigers just their sixth SCAC loss at home dating back to 1991. Bencomo followed that performance up by assisting the game-winning goal in St. Thomas’ 1-0 win over Schreiner on Sunday. For the week, Bencomo finished with three points on one goal and one assist.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman forward Griffin Meyer of Colorado College scored twice to help left CC to a 5-1 victory over Texas Lutheran last Sunday and secure a perfect 2-0 record on the weekend for the Tigers. Senior Hunter Haugland of Dallas produced his second game-winning goal and sixth of the season as the Crusaders defeated Austin College, 1-0, last Friday. Junior forward Emad Bashir-Mohammed of Johnson & Wales scored in both of the Wildcats’ contests last weekend, producing two goals and pushing his season total to six. Freshman midfielder Blaze Presley of Schreiner scored his first career and game-winning goal against Centenary last Friday. Junior defender Michael Glode of Southwestern scored the Pirates’ first goal and assisted on the game-winner of a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against Johnson & Wales last Sunday. Freshman forward Marco Roman of Texas Lutheran scored two goals in a road win over Johnson & Wales and had a goal in the road loss to Colorado College. Junior midfielder Quentin Van Der Lee of Trinity produced his first multi-goal game of his Tiger career, scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Centenary last Sunday.
