TOM HULTSCH OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior defender from Luneburg, Germany, has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, October 13th.
Hultsch anchored a Celts defense that posted back-to-back road shutouts en route to a pair of wins that has St. Thomas tied atop the SCAC standings with nine total points through the opening two weekends of conference action. In the 1-0 win over Trinity, Hultsch and the Celts defense shutout the Tigers at home in an SCAC contest for the first time since 2013 and just the fifth time in the SCAC era. Hultsch also chipped in on the offensive end scoring his second goal of the season against Schreiner which proved to be the difference in the 1-0 victory.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore defender Rory Eastland-Fruit of Colorado College played all 180 minutes in a pair of Tiger wins last week, anchoring a defense that allowed just one goal and posted a shutout in the 1-0 win over Southwestern. Eastland-Fruit also added an assist in Sunday’s win over Texas Lutheran, 5-1. Junior goalkeeper Caleb Strange of Dallas corralled two saves and led the Crusaders to their first SCAC win and first shutout of the year, defeating Austin College 1-0 last Friday. Freshman goalkeeper Cody Smith of Schreiner posted his second shutout of the year, collecting six saves, as the Mountaineers handed Centenary its first league loss of the year last Friday. Sophomore defender Jacob Galan of Trinity led the Tigers to their fourth shutout of the season last Sunday when they defeated Centenary, 2-0.
