TREYLAN MATTHEWS OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a senior guard from Houston, Texas., has been named the SCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Thursday, November 8 through Sunday, November 11.
Matthews had a great game in helping the Gents win their first season-opener in five years with Saturday's 84-79 victory over Hardin-Simmons. He scored 17 points in the first half alone, going 6-for-8 from the field.
Matthews finished with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, grabbing six rebounds while dishing three assists and snaring two steals.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore guard Justice Mercadel of Austin College stuffed the stat sheet, averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks-per-game while shooting 46.2 percent (6-13) from the field, 42.9 percent (3-7) from long distance, and 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line as the 'Roos went 1-1 to open the year. Mercadel poured in 25 points in a season-opening win over Howard Payne. Senior guard Jacob Kouremetis of Texas Lutheran scored a team-high 22 points and added two assists and three rebounds in the Bulldogs' 90-87 opening loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. He made seven of his eleven field goal attempts and 4-for-4 from the foul line. From the three-point line, Kouremetis shot .571, going 4-for-7 in his 29 minutes of action.
