Men's Basketball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams continued conference play this week.

Both on three-game winning streaks, Austin College and Texas Lutheran sit atop the standings with 3-0 records in SCAC play. The ‘Roos defeated Trinity University and Schreiner University at home this weekend, while the Bulldogs took down Centenary College and Colorado College in Seguin, Texas.

Schreiner and Centenary are third and fourth in the standings, respectively, both holding .500 records. Schreiner has a 1-1 record in their two SCAC games this season, while Centenary is 2-2.

The University of Dallas, Southwestern University and Colorado College have each recorded one win in conference play, and Trinity rounds out the standings at 0-2.

Austin College
The ‘Roos earned two wins at home this weekend, defeating Trinity and Schreiner. Friday night, AC defeated the Tigers 60-48 in a defensive battle. Both teams were held under 40% shooting, and the ‘Roos held a 42-39 advantage on the boards. Jeremy Swisher led the team with 17 points, adding seen rebounds and three steals. Brian Baehl marked 12 points of his own and a team-leading six assists. Austin Freet dominated on the defensive end, recording 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Freet also added eight points for the ‘Roos. The following night, AC defeated Schreiner 71-66. After taking a seven-point lead at halftime, the Mountaineers were able to take a one-point lead with 1:25 remaining in the game. The ‘Roos scored six straight points to close out the game for a win. Cedric Hudson led the team with 18 points, shooting 10-11 from the charity stripe. Alan Sullivan and Baehl each added 11 point, while Swisher and Eghosa Igbinosa each totaled 10 points. Three players marked a team-leading five rebounds, while Baehl dished out five assists.

Centenary College
The Gents split their weekend on the road, falling to Texas Lutheran Friday night, before defeating Southwestern University Saturday. In the matchup with TLU, the Gents fell 75-70. James Sapp led the team with 17 points, also recording six rebounds, one assists, two steals and a block. Caden Cheramie and Kendall Demouchet each put up 15 points, while Demouchet added a team-leading seven rebounds. Travion Kirkendoll rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, while dishing out seven assists. Following the loss, the Gents took down the Pirates of Southwestern 70-65. Sapp proved to be dominant in the game, scoring almost half of Centenary’s total points with 32. He also led the team on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds. Brandon Campbell was the only other Gent to put up double-digit scoring, marking 10 points. Kirkendoll and Cheramie each added seven points and four rebounds for the team.

Colorado College
After opening SCAC play with a 1-1 record, the Tigers fell on the road to both Southwestern and Texas Lutheran this weekend. Friday night, the Tigers couldn’t compete with a hot shooting Pirates’ team, falling 81-68 in Georgetown. Chris Lesnansky led the team with 24 points and nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Eric Houska and Ryan Kell each added 12 points in the game. The Tigers were able to force 16 turnovers by the Pirates, leading to 13 points. The following night, CC fell to TLU 74-59. The Tigers shot .442 from the field, and held a 35-34 rebounding advantage, but couldn’t procure the win. Lesnansky, Houska and Russell Clark each totaled 13 points to lead the team, while Lesnansky added 11 rebounds. Clark added seven rebounds, while Kell led the team with four assists. 12 of Houska’s 13 points came from long-range as he shot 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

University of Dallas
The Crusaders competed in three games this week, including one non-conference matchup Monday. Dallas began the week with a dominating 73-56 win over Hendrix College. Kym Malone led the team with 13 points, while Mark Promberger added 14 and Lorenzo Gonzalez put up 11. Tom Kaiser led the team with seven assists in the game, also adding eight points. Friday night, the Crusaders fell to Schreiner 64-61 at home after holding a five point advantage at halftime. Malone and Michael Sarrat each recorded 12 points to lead the team, followed by 11 from Lorenzo Gonzalez. Malone and Kaiser each pulled down four rebounds to lead the team, while Gonzalez dished out a five assists. The following night, the Crusaders earned their first SCAC win, defeating Trinity 67-53. Sarrat led the team with 15 points, while also grabbing two rebounds and dishing out three assists. Promberger was the only other double-digit scorer for UD, marking 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds. The Crusaders shot .500 from the field in the game, and forced 12 turnovers that led to 15 points.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers split their weekend, defeating Dallas 64-61 on Friday, but falling to Austin College 71-66 the following night. In their first matchup, SU was led by Wes Miller and Keenan Gumbs who each put up 12 points. Stevan Guerrero and Maverick Harris also added 10 points apiece to round out the top scorers. Guerrero led the team with eight rebounds and four assists in the game. The Mountaineers dominated on the boards, holding a 36-24 rebounding advantage. The following night, Schreiner couldn’t pull out a comeback against the ‘Roos. Miller and Jared Thompson each marked 18 points to lead the team. Miller shot a perfect 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc in the game. Thompson also had an impressive shooting performance, going 6-8 from the field and 2-2 from long-range. Christian Pena added 11 points in the game, while marking seven rebounds to lead SU.

Southwestern University
The Pirates moved to 1-2 in SCAC play this weekend, defeating Colorado College Friday night, but falling to Centenary Saturday. In their first matchup, the Pirates earned an 81-68 win over the visiting Tigers. Travis Kurtz led the team with a season-high 16 points, followed by 15 from Blake Scott. Chris Lee, Ryan Ogden, Zach Whitlock and Chris Molina rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14, 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively. Ogden also pulled down eight rebounds to lead the team. The Pirates shot 47.3% from the field in the game and 76.9% from the charity stripe, while holding a 43-31 rebounding advantage. SU forced 13 turnovers by the Tigers which led to 23 points. The following night, the Pirates couldn’t hold onto a late comeback and fell 70-65 to the visiting Gents. The game featured eight ties and eight lead changes throughout. Ogden recorded his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Whitlock was the only other Pirate to score in the double-digits, marking 12 points. Brandyn Hawk dished out eight assists to lead the team.

Texas Lutheran
The Bulldogs earned the top spot in the SCAC this weekend with wins over Centenary and Colorado College at home. Friday night, TLU defeated the Gents 75-70, led by Sterling Holmes with 19 points. Donte McGee put up 13 points and 10 rebounds in the game, while Jordan Kouremetis and Thomas Verm added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Holmes also led the team with six assists. The Bulldogs held a dominating 48-28 rebounding advantage, and forced 16 turnovers in a game which featured eight ties and 10 lead changes throughout. The following night, Holmes led the team again with 20 points and four assists. Mcgee marked his fifth double-double of the season and fourth consecutive with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Kouremetis rounded out the top scorers with 11 points. The Bulldogs forced 20 turnovers by the Tigers, while only committing 12.

Trinity University
The Tigers fell to 0-2 in SCAC play this weekend, falling on the road to the Austin College and Dallas. Friday night, TU dropped the conference-opener 60-48 against the ‘Roos. A.J. Pulliam led the team with 11 points and six rebounds. Brian Blum put up 10 points and four rebounds in the game, while Craig Saltarelli added nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. The following night, the Tigers fell 67-53 to Dallas. Nik Oakes led the team with 11 points, while Aaron Knopp put up 10. Joseph Thomas added nine points for Trinity, followed by eight from Pulliam. Matt Jones led the team with six rebounds and two assists in the game. The Tigers held a 34-31 rebounding advantage in the game, but couldn’t stop a hot shooting Crusaders’ team.
