JOHN SPARKS OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from New Canaan, Conn., has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, February 10 through Sunday, February 16. 

With Sul Ross State up 4-1 and the bases loaded, Sparks entered Saturday's first game against Sul Ross State in the second inning and promptly struck out Richard Bailey to stop the bleeding. The sophomore went on to pitch three more scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts against 13 hitters faced as the Pirates rallied and pulled away for the 12-4 win.

Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Matthew Devillier of Centenary recorded another superb pitching performance this past weekend as he tossed a complete-game, his second in a row this season, and allowed just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out five in a 3-1 victory over Louisiana College in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. Senior left hander Conrad Voss of Dallas pitched a seven-inning, complete game at Howard Payne on Saturday. It was the second complete game for Voss, who had a shutout bid heading into the last inning, this season. Junior left hander Garrett Whitley of Schreiner pitched a six inning complete game, giving up two runs, one of them earned, six strikeouts, on just 75 pitches, in a 2-0 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. Senior right hander Landon Weatherly of Texas Lutheran tossed six innings, allowed two earned runs, and struck out seven in picking up the road pitching win at Hardin-Simmons. Senior right hander Matthew Thomas of Trinity appeared in three of the team's four games to open the season at this weekend's Concordia Classic, during which third-ranked Trinity began the year 4-0. Thomas earned three saves in the first three games of the season, pitching 4.1 shutout innings of relief, giving up just two hits, and striking out five batters.
