KERRVILLE, Texas – Trinity University's 20th-ranked women's golf won its third consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday, finishing with the top four individuals in the tournament on its way to the title.
The Tigers shot a team score of 313 today, which is one shot better than their score yesterday. The two-day total of 627 ties the 36-hole record for a tournament, equaling the mark Trinity set in winning last year's SCAC title. This is the seventh team championship in Trinity women's golf history, and the Tigers have won six of the last nine SCAC titles.
In addition to the team championship, Trinity sophomore
Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino (Marbella, Spain / Atalaya) won the team's fourth overall individual SCAC Women's Golf Championship by shooting a two-day total of 153 (75-78). Junior
Kiona Hsiu (Missouri City, Texas / Elkins) was the runner-up, finishing just two shots back of her teammate with a score of 155 (78-77). Hsiu won last year's individual title and the duo are the first back-to-back winners in school history.
Junior
Lucy Hansen (Gilbert, Ariz. / Campo Verde) was third with a score of 159 (80-79), while fellow junior
Erin Flynn (League City, Texas / Clear Falls) was tied with two other golfers in fourth with a score of 160 (81-79). Senior
Erin Farrow (Fulshear, Texas / Churchill) finished in a tie for 19th with a 174 (87-87) and sophomore
Carmen Kennett (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) was 21st after shooting 176 (88-88) in the two-day event.
Sanchez, Hsiu, Hansen, and Flynn each are First Team All-SCAC honorees by virtue of their top five finishes. This year marks the third straight year that Hsiu and Flynn have earned First Team honors, while Sanchez is now a two-time winner of the award. This is Hansen's first All-SCAC honor.
Trinity won the title by 18 strokes over second-place Southwestern University, which had nearly the same margin between them and the University of St. Thomas in third. The University of Dallas finished fourth, followed by tournament host Schreiner University in fifth, and Texas Lutheran University in sixth.
"I am proud of the golf that was played by the team the last two days," said Assistant Director of Golf
Shelby DeVore, after leading the team to its second conference title in her two years with the team. "We had a pretty good lead going into today. We had a rough start today, but one of the great things about this team is they can finish strong, and they did that today. Even more proud that we took first through fourth as individuals. Looking forward to going to Nationals again in a few weeks!"
This year's SCAC Championship earns Trinity an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs, which will be Tuesday, May 9, through Friday, May 12, at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
