Ladies Finish Millsaps Invitational On A High Note

Jackson, Miss. – The Centenary volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Millsaps Volleyball Invitational, falling 3-0 to Concordia (Texas) and then sweeping Belhaven University as the Ladies finished the weekend with two wins in three matches at the Hangar Dome.

The Ladies (4-4) opened play in the event on Friday evening with a clean sweep of the host, Millsaps College, 3-0 and have won four of five games after opening the season 0-3. Centenary defeated Tougaloo College, 3-1, on Thursday after defeating the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Eagles at home on Tuesday, 3-1, in its home opener.

Match one recap: Concordia (Texas) 3 Centenary 0

Concordia took set one, 25-17, then won a close battle in the second set (25-22) before finishing off the Ladies in the third set, 25-16. Centenary struggled offensively, mustering just a .091 hitting % and had 18 errors.

Senior DS/L Jaycie Proctor (Paris, Texas) led the way with 16 digs in the loss, freshman S Meadow Smith (Mansfield, Texas) had 17 assists, and Canady and St. Martin each had six kills. The Ladies finished the match with 43 digs, 28 assists, 28 kills, and four aces. Sophomore MB Elizabeth Canady (League City, Texas) and fellow sophomore RS Jaylin St. Martin (New Orleans, La.) each had six kills.

Match two recap: Centenary 3 Belhaven 0

The Ladies rebounded with an impressive offensive performance versus Belhaven that evening, recording a season-best .236 hitting percentage along with 44 digs, 33 kills, 32 assists, and 11 aces. Centenary recorded four solo blocks versus Belhaven, tied for eighth all-time in a match in the current division III era (2011-present).

Centenary took the first set 25-19 and then ran away from the Blazers in the second set, 25-15, before dominating the third set 25-12 to record the impressive sweep.

Proctor had a team-high 17 digs, Smith had 11, senior MB Liz Lowe (San Antonio, Texas) had 11 kills, and Smith had 23 assists and a team-high three aces. Four other Ladies – junior MB/OH Robin Lemelle (Liberty, Texas), sophomore OH/DS Kiara Liedy (Sugar Land, Texas), and Lowe each had two aces.

Centenary is back at home on Tuesday evening as the Maroon and White will face Wiley College in a non-conference contest set for 6 p.m. at the Gold Dome.
