Men’s Basketball Drops Two in Virginia

The Pirate men's basketball team travelled to Ashland, Virginia for Thanksgiving break and dropped two games over the weekend to fall to 0-6 on the year.

Friday night SU took on Randolph-Macon and fell behind early. RMC put together numerous solid runs in the first half and sent Southwestern into the locker room down 23, 52-29.

As with earlier contests, the Pirates hit their stride in the second half but were unable to threaten Randolph-Macon as they fell 94-65.

SU shot just 46.2% from the floor and 28.6% from the three-point line in the contest and was led by Logan Hurley who scored 18 points. Michael Cantu added in 12 as did Kenneth Brooks off the bench. RMC out-rebounded the Pirates 35-20.

In Saturday's contest against Virginia Wesleyan Southwestern started out strong but VWC went on a 16-0 through the middle of the first half and sent SU into halftime down 41-26.

Southwestern opened the second half on a run of their own to pull within six, 46-40 on Nick Atiee's layup five minutes into the second half, but the Pirates then went cold, scoring just 18 points the rest of the way to fall 73-58.

Southwestern shot just 40% from the free throw line and 42.1% from the field in the loss while being -18 in rebounding margin. Hurley, Daniel Mataya and Cantu led with 10 points each while Sean Meyers had seven boards to lead SU.

The Pirates remain on the road to open SCAC conference action next weekend, facing Colorado College on Friday at 9pm CST.
