A pair of school records highlighted the 2017 Colorado College Track and Field Invitational Saturday at Washburn Field.
Sophomore
Henry Baldwin led off the meet with a leap of 6'7" in the high jump, breaking the school record of 6'6" shared by Glen Collins (1976) and Brian Matofske (2002). Baldwin cleared the record height on his second attempt after easily clearing 6'4" and 6'6", each in one attempt.
"We weren't expecting the high jump record today," head coach
Ted Castaneda said. "We were thinking 6'5" or 6"6" since we are coming off of spring break, but what a jump to get the school record. It was an awesome performance and to have all his teammates there really fired him up."
Later in the meet, senior
Conor Terhune broke the school mark in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:31.2, surpassing the previous record of 6:32.6 set by Pat Shannon in 2001.
"Conor really wanted the record today," Castaneda said. "He was hurting that last quarter but didn't let it go. It is great that he got it as a senior at his home meet."
Sophomore
Quin Gattey captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.7 seconds, while junior
Ethan Holland finished third in 53.2. Gattey also won the 400-meter hurdles race, followed by junior
Justin Nguyen in second.
Freshman
David Figel won the pole vault and shot put, while Baldwin won the long jump and freshman
Jonah Baca captured the triple jump. Sophomore
Noah Shuster and Nguyen finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter dash and freshman
Tony Calderon finished third in the mile
"Once again we had some outstanding performances and are really looking forward to April," Castaneda said.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 1, as the sprinters will run at the CSU-Pueblo Open and the distance runners to the Alex Francis Classic in Hays, Kan.
