CC Clinches Fifth Seed for SCAC Championship

Junior guard Jordan Meltzer matched her season high with 16 points as the Colorado College women's basketball team clinched the fifth seed in the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship with a 78-48 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 11-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play, and earned a date with Southwestern University in a quarterfinal game of the SCAC tournament on Friday, Feb. 22, at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. Game times will be announced on Sunday.

Meltzer, who connected on six of seven shots from the floor, poured in 11 points during the first quarter when CC utilized a 20-3 surge to open a 28-12 cushion after 10 minutes.

JWU hit its first three shots from behind the arc and led 9-8 a little more than three minutes into the contest, but from that point on it was all Tigers who shot nearly 70 percent from the floor during the first quarter.

After trailing by as many as 23 points late in the third quarter, the Wildcats scored eight in a row to pull to within 57-42 with 6:02 remaining.

After a Colorado College timeout, Meltzer hit a three-pointer from the top left of the arc to halt JWU's run and ignite a 21-6 surge to close out the game.

Junior forward Nia Duplain finished with 12 points, her 10th game this season with double-digit points.

Freshman guard Izzy Strigel also reached double digits with 11 points for the Tigers.

McKenzee Gertz led CC with a game-high 12 rebounds and added nine points.

The sophomore winger became the 31st Tiger to reach the 700-point mark and finished the game in 30th place on the program's career scoring chart with 708.

Gertz also improved her season rebound total to 207, which marked the 29th time a Colorado College player grabbed 200 or more in a single season.

Senior guard Casey Torbet finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Her season total of 111 assists ranks ninth on the program's single-season high.

Katey Guzman led the Wildcats with 17 points and nine rebounds.

In its first season as a member of the SCAC, Johnson & Wales finished with a 2-20 overall record and a 1-15 mark in conference play.
