Box Score Schreiner University utilized a 25-6 run during the second half to record a 78-62 victory over Colorado College on Saturday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Tigers, who finished the regular season with a 15-10 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. CC had already locked up the second seed and a first-round bye for the conference tournament Feb. 26-28 in Shreveport, La.
Senior forward
James Lonergan led CC with 17 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward
Andrew Maddock finished with 12 points and eight boards, while sophomore forward
John Hatch had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
Colorado College shot a season-low 32-percent from the floor, making only 20 of 62 field-goal attempts, and lost the battle on the boards, 47-40.
The Mountaineers were no better during the first half, but heated up dramatically during the final 20 minutes when they connected on 18 of 35 shots.
A three-point play by Lonergan gave the Tigers a 34-30 lead 2:12 into the second half and they led 39-36 after freshman guard
Reed Nakakihara dialed long distance with a little less than 16 minutes to play.
CC managed only six points during the next eight minutes as Schreiner turned a three-point deficit into a 16-point cushion after Jared Thompson connected from behind the arc for three of his team-high 17 points with 7:44 to play.
Colorado College pulled to within 11 points with 4:35 to play, but was unable to get any closer.
The Mountaineers sank 11 of 12 free throws during the final three minutes to put the game on ice.
Schreiner's Christian Pena posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Wes Miller added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers, who improved to 10-14 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
