Tigers come from behind to defeat Sewanee

Jarrell Sweet gave Colorado College the lead with 26 seconds remaining and Jeremiah Waters sank a pair of free throws with 12 seconds to play as the Tigers came from behind for a 55-52 victory on Sunday at Sewanee: The University of the South.

It was Colorado College's first road win in two seasons as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and its first away from home since Feb. 24, 2007, when the Tigers defeated UC Santa Cruz, 79-63, in the third-place game of the Association of Division III Independents West Region Championship in Lincoln, Neb.

CC improved to 4-15 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC. The Tigers, along with Millsaps College, trail Southwestern University by one game in the West Division standings and are still in contention for a spot in the eight-team conference tournament. Sewanee dropped to 4-15 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Colorado College led 30-21 when Nick Rose scored three straight points with 19:15 remaining in the second half, but Sewanee battled back to take its first lead of the game with Kenton Coleman connected from long range with 10:19 to go.

Sewanee stretched its lead to 44-38 on a three-pointer by Eric Schneider 1:54 later, but this time CC would not let its opponent pull away. Coleman gave Sewanee a 49-44 advantage with another three-pointer with 3:59 to play, but CC stepped up the defensive pressure and held Sewanee to just three points the rest of the way.

The Tigers trailed 52-49 with 1:02 remaining, but Waters his both ends of a one-and-one with 49 seconds to play and Sweet's second steal in a span of eight seconds set up his game-winning layup.

Rose led Colorado College with 12 points and four steals, while Brady Ohlsen added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Both players fouled out during a 40-second span beginning at the 3:10 mark.

Waters finished with nine points, while Sweet added seven points and added four steals.

Ben Pursell had 12 points and seven rebounds to pace Sewanee, while Coleman chipped in 10 points and four assists.

CC begins a four-game home stand next weekend when the Tigers play host to Hendrix College and Millsaps on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
