Pollifrone Gives Pirates 2OT Win Over Comets

GEORGETOWN, Texas – It was a defensive showdown on Sunday afternoon as the Southwestern women's soccer team took on the University of Texas Dallas. The game was deadlocked 0-0 through 105 minutes, but Maria Pollifrone's (pictured) shot lifted the Pirates to the 1-0 win.

UT Dallas started with direct attacks and Leah Bowyer was able to get behind SU's defense twice, but both times Pirate keeper Sarah Nonaka had control of the goal and made saves to keep the game scoreless.

Jillian Curran was an ignition point for the Pirates, sparking several good attacks in the first half that were ultimately fruitless.

After a long series of throw-ins Southwestern finally earned their first corner kick in the 41st minute. Claire Matthews played a beautiful ball into the box toward the far post and Allie Dillon managed to get her head on it and redirect toward goal. Dillon's header had to be saved by UTD's sweeper, clearing the ball and the threat. The two teams headed into the break still deadlocked 0-0 despite a final corner kick attempt and shot on goal by the Comets with less than a minute to go in the half.

Curran once again got a great opportunity in the 53rd minute. Pollifrone sent the ball into the box from the left and Curran, open in front of the goal, gathered the ball, turned and shot. Curran's shot was again blocked and saved by UTD's defense, keeping the game scoreless.

The pressure continued throughout the rest of the second half but the defense held strong on both sides to silence the attacks. Two breakaways for the Pirates ended without a goal when the ball fed through the defense rolled just beyond the streaking forward.

Despite a red card being handed out to the Comets, the regulation ended in a 0-0 tie and the game headed to an extra frame.

After one overtime the Pirates had the first real look of the extra frames. SU earned a corner kick after Rebecca Petro cleverly deflected the ball off of UTD's defense. Matthews took the corner and lofted the ball into the 6-yard box to Curran whose header skimmed just over the crossbar.

Pollifrone took the game into her own hands in the 106th minute. Defender Lyndsey Resnik's shot was blocked by the Comet defense and veered off to Pollifrone. Pollifrone gathered the ball and took a perfect shot from the left of the goal to the right lower 90 and into the back of the net for the game winner. The goal is Pollifrone's second of the season.

The win improves the Pirates to 3-1-1 on the year. They remain at home for a pair of games this weekend, facing UC Santa Crux on Friday and Huston Tillotson on Sunday. The games are the final matches before the Pirates head into SCAC conference action.
