Tigers Run Out of Time Against TLU

Box Score James Lonergan and John Hatch combined for 43 points and 13 rebounds, but Colorado College ran out of time and dropped an 80-77 decision to Texas Lutheran University in Sunday's title game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship.

Hatch scored a game-high 23 points, making 9 of 14 shots from the floor and all four of his free throws. Lonergan finished with 20 points and narrowly missed out on a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs led 70-61 after Paris Marquez completed a three-point play with 3:58 remaining in the game. That also was when CC sophomore forward Andrew Maddock fouled out after playing only 13 minutes.

TLU's lead was just large enough to allow the SCAC regular-season champs to escape with the victory.

The Tigers pulled to within five points on Hatch's jumper with 3:04 remaining and then again after Lonergan sank a pair of free throws with 2:22 to play.

Jordan Kouremetis made the biggest play of the final 90 seconds when he chased down the rebound of his missed layup and then hit a three-pointer with 52 seconds to go.

Three-point plays by Lonergan and Justin Berardino got CC to within 78-75 with 10 seconds remaining, but Kouremetis sank a pair of charity tosses before Lonergan hit a jumper as time expired.

Berardino tied his career high of 11 assists for the second game in a row and completed his career 15th in program history with 189. He became the 28th Tiger to eclipse the 800-point plateau, finishing with 806, and also climbed into 35th place with 332 rebounds.

Lonergan moved into a tie for 21st with 438 rebounds and 24th with 148 assists.

Colorado College took a 24-16 lead on Luke Winfield's free throw almost nine minutes into the first half and stayed in front until Zach Bear canned a jumper with 6:43 remaining in the first half.

A pair of free throws by Ray Blake put the Bulldogs ahead by one with 3:50 to play and they used a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 41-35 after 20 minutes.

Sterling Holmes, the SCAC's Player of the Year, scored 17 points for TLU. Kouremetis and Ray added 13 apiece.

Texas Lutheran improved to 21-6 and earned the SCAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.

Colorado College finished the season with a 16-11 record.

CC's seniors completed their careers with a 62-43 ledger.
