Blewett smashes a 2-run home run, but No. 10 DePauw (Ind.) sneaks past No. 5 Softball 5-4 for NCAA Regional crown

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- No. 10 DePauw (Ind.) broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth frame and held on for a 5-4 victory over No. 5-ranked Ohio Northern on a wet Monday afternoon in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Greencastle Regional Softball Tournament at DePauw Tigers Field.
The Polar Bears see their season end with a 41-7 record, while the Tigers win the Greencastle Regional and advance to the NCAA III World Series May 21-25 at Eau Claire, Wis. with a 39-7 mark.
The game was delayed 6 hours, 10 minutes from its original 10 am start time due to heavy rains in the area.
This marks the second consecutive year that the two schools have met for the regional crown, with Ohio Northern winning the 2009 title game by a 4-1 score.
ONU posted a 4-2 record in the double-elimination tournament, including victories over No. 17 Washington (Mo.) and DePauw on Sunday in elimination contests to reach the finals.
Sophomore Kimi Blewett drilled a 2-run home run and senior Cortney Cash and sophomore Jackie Mangola each collected a pair of hits to lead the Polar Bear offense.
Blewett, seniors Mandi Fought and Tina Mangola and sophomore Katie Cretin were named to the All-Tournament Team.
DU All-American Megan Soultz earned the win on the mound to improve to 28-5, while Cash took the loss to fall to 23-4 on the season.
"We certainly did not play our best game of the year, but I was proud of our effort," ONU head coach Annette Shepherd said. "We had too many missed opportunities that cost us some runs early, but made some outstanding defensive plays to save some runs later.
"We were not ready for the season to end for sure. I am very proud of our four seniors and what they have accomplished in their four years at Ohio Northern. It was a dissapointing end to an outstanding season."
Northern scored in the top of the first when senior Mandi Fought led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a two-out double to left field by sophomore Katie Cretin.
The Tigers grabbed the lead in the home half of the second frame on a sacrifice fly by Haley Buchanan, an RBI single by Rachel MacBeth and a ground out by Jen Kosinski. Northern had a throwing error and several defensive miscues to sustain the Tiger rally.
It didn't take the Polar Bears long to answer, as sophomore Kimi Blewett drilled a 2-run home run to center field to score sophomore Jackie Mangola with one out in the top of the third and tie the contest at 3-3.
The home run was Blewett's 13th of the campaign and tied her for the single-season school record, set on Sunday by Jackie Mangola.
DePauw took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third when Holly Paris was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, went to second on a sac bunt, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Ashlee Anton.
Northern took advantage of two errors by DU's right fielder to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth.
Senior Cortney Cash led off the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second when the ball scooted away from Paris. A sac bunt by Fought advanced Cash to third and she scored one out later when Paris dropped a routine fly ball off the bat of senior Tina Mangola.
Two outstanding defensive plays by the Polar Bears in the bottom of the fifth kept the game tied.
First, Fought robbed Anton of a home run with a leaping catch of a deep fly ball at the center field fence for the second out of the frame.
Sophomore Cassie Gaye followed Fought's gem by running down a foul ball behind the third base bag off the bat of Buchanan to end the inning.
The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Cymone Allen led off with a single through the right side and scored one out later on a double by Brianne Weeks.
Cash collected a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but Soultz would strike out the final two ONU batters to end the contest.
