Box Score Colorado College extended its winning streak to three games and continued its climb in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a hard-fought 71-64 victory at Austin College on Friday night.
Sophomore forward
CooXooEii Black recorded his sixth double-double of the season with game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds as CC improved to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the SCAC.
Black was virtually unstoppable, hitting eight of 10 shots from the floor and seven of eight free throws.
Thanks to their recent success on the road, the Tigers have climbed into a tie for fourth place in the league standings with the University of Dallas. Third-place Trinity University, which is 5-4 in the conference, is just a half-game ahead.
Colorado College's four remaining games are against the teams at the top of the SCAC standings, the last three of which are at home.
Eric Houska scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half to ensure the Tigers escaped Hughey Gym with the victory.
With his layup 6:15 into the contest, the senior guard became the 11th player in program history to reach 1,200 career points. He finished the game with 1,216.
Houska also climbed into third place on the school's all-time assist list. He surpassed Eric Walker's (1980-84) total of 375 when his dish set up a three-pointer by
Eric Jonas with 7:45 remaining in the game.
Neither team led by more than four points until Kameron Hill connected from behind the arc early in the second half to give Austin a 43-38 lead.
A Michael Holland layup put the 'Roos ahead 55-54 with 6:29 to play, but Black sank a pair of free throws nearly a minute later to spark an 11-2 surge that put the Tigers ahead to stay.
CC took its largest lead at 65-57 after
Chris Martin completed a three-point play with 2:49 to go. However, Austin was able to slice its deficit to three points when Justin Mercadel produced his own three-point play with 51 seconds on the clock.
Martin finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Senior guard
Bobby Roth scored eight of his 10 points in the second half for Colorado College, including five during the final five minutes.
The Tigers forced a pair of turnovers and sank four of six free throws during the final 40 seconds to seal the victory.
Kam Hogan produced 14 points and a game-high five assists for the 'Roos, who dropped to 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the SCAC.
Mercadel also finished with 14 points, while Hill added 13.
Colorado College wraps up its stretch of four consecutive road games tomorrow night at Centenary College in Shreveport, La.
