In his first game as a Tiger, junior attackman
Anders Erickson scored four goals and set up four others to power the Colorado College men's lacrosse team to an 18-3 victory over Colorado State University Pueblo in the season opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Washburn Field.
After
Charlie Gans put the Tigers on the board almost three minutes into the game, Erickson scored twice in a span of 16 seconds. Following the first of
Luca Lietti's three goals, Erickson set up
Makay Hansen's first tally and then struck for the third time 16 seconds later.
CC led 8-0 after 15 minutes and was ahead 13-0 before Trenton Steele put the ThunderWolves on the board with 4:55 remaining before halftime.
Erickson set up goals by Lietti and Hansen in the second period and scored for the final time with 2:55 to go to give Colorado College a 14-1 lead after 30 minutes. Midway through the third quarter, he earned his fourth assist on Hansen's third goal.
Erickson's eight points are the most by a Tiger since
John Sutro recorded three goals and seven assists during the 21-8 victory over Widener University on March 2, 2019.
Hansen finished with three or more goals for the sixth time in seven career games and recorded four or more points for the fifth time.
Lietti's three-goal performance was his first at CC, while Gans recorded the first two goals of his career.
Elliot Nelson scored once in each half for his 11th career game with at least two goals.
First-year Tigers
Declan Maguire and
Max Carneal each potted their first goal as Tigers.
In all, nine different players scored goals for Colorado College while 15 had at least a point.
At the defensive end, the Tigers caused 18 turnovers and held an opponent to less then five goals for the fifth time in the last seven games dating back to the start of the 2020 season.
Winston Chodnicki won 11 of 12 faceoffs and led CC with a game-high six ground balls, while junior long-stick midfielder
John Lawrence scooped up five ground balls and caused a career-best four turnovers.
Freshman goaltender
Ben Anastos played the first 45 minutes and stopped seven of the nine shots he faced. Sophomore
Pat Mahoney made a pair of saves during the final 15 minutes.
The Tigers finished with a 70-28 advantage in total shots and a 44-22 edge in ground balls.
Coach's Comments
"Today was a great team win and everybody contributed," head coach
Sean Woods said. "We talked about starting fast. And we did it in all four phases, Offense, defense, goalie and face off. Our team is so grateful to be out there playing lacrosse and it really showed with our play."
Colorado College Standouts
Jacob Smith and
Dylan Wells each had two assists.
Sam DiMaio recorded four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
CSU Pueblo Standouts
Trenton Steele led the ThunderWolves with two goals.
Garrett Breeling made 12 saves during the second half.
