Texas Lutheran Suffers 64-55 Setback against Southwest (NM)

ALPINE, TX -- Texas Lutheran women's basketball dropped a neutral site contest to University of the Southwest (New Mexico), 64-55, Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center on the campus of Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 2-3 overall to start the season.

Texas Lutheran outscored Southwest 16-9 in the third quarter to erase a six-point halftime deficit but the Bulldogs couldn't hold off a University of the Southwest team that went 54% from the field in the fourth quarter - outscoring the Bulldogs 21-11.

Sophomore forward Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) was the Bulldogs leading scorer notching her first double-double of the season - scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs. Moehrig was 5-of-10 from the field and made 5-of-6 free throws. Senior Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) pitched in eight points, three rebounds, and two assists and senior guard Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) returned from injury to lead the Bulldogs with four assists.

The Bulldogs struggled from the field shooting 25.6% from the field on the afternoon. The Bulldogs turnover woes continued turning the ball over 14 times, placing them -6 in the turnover department.

The Bulldogs led the Mustangs 16-15 after the first quarter - partially due to a six-point quarter from Santa Maria. The Bulldogs went cold in the second quarter shooting 21% from the field as the Mustangs outscored the Bulldogs 19-12. With the Bulldogs trailing by seven to start the third, Moehrig and Heaven Dandridge (Bay City/Liberty Hill) combined for 14 of the team's 16 third quarter points to put the Bulldogs ahead by one to start the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs went cold while the Mustangs caught fire. The Mustangs poured in 21 points on 53.8% shooting while the Bulldogs scored 11 points on 10.5% shooting.

The Bulldogs look to bounce back tomorrow, Nov. 21, as they face Sul Ross State in a rematch of Monday's contest that saw the Bulldogs fall 58-56. Tip-off is set for 3 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
