IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's soccer team defeated University of St. Thomas (TX), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders (9-5-1, 5-1 SCAC) capped a 4-1 home stand that included a 6-1 month of October, as they held the Celts scoreless until the last two minutes of action. A pair of second-half goals by Taylor Knochenhauer (San Antonio, Texas) and Victoria Salazar (Grand Terrace, Calif.) lifted UD in the triumph.

These teams played even throughout the first 45 minutes with St. Thomas (4-7-1, 1-4 SCAC) being outshot by just one (7-6). Overall the Crusaders held an 18-15 edge in shots. They also won the corner kicks battle, 4-3. This included a 3-1 advantage in the second half.

In the 71st minute Alyssa Mencacci (League City, Texas) had a shot saved by UST's goalie Olivia Futch, but it was deflected to the right side and Knochenhauer converted off the rebound for her first collegiate goal.

St. Thomas looked to answer, but had an offside called at the 76:06 minute mark and a shot by Aeriana Lewis that was saved by UD's Olivia Severson (La Crosse, Wis.).

At the 79:53 mark a pair of seniors for the Crusaders, Gaby Gonzalez (McAllen, Texas) and Salazar teamed up with Gonzalez finding Salazar for a long strike that tucked into the upper right corner for her first career goal as well.

The Celts countered with six of the last seven shots in the match, with three of them saved. Katarina Maksimov converted a penalty kick at the 88:17 mark for her team-leading seventh goal. Less than a minute later UST sent a long serve that found Maksimov deep on the left side of the box, but Bekah Gonzalez (Reno, Nev.) made a team save and forced the visitors to settle for a corner kick that led to an offside called later.

Severson (8-5) finished with five saves to go with the team save that gave Dallas six in the match. Izzy Barajas (Bryan, Texas), Mencacci, and Monica O'Donnell (Lincoln, Neb.) led the team with three shots apiece. Barajas placed all of hers on target, while Knochenhauer was also perfect putting multiple shots on target with two. Elisa Duran (Pomona, Calif.) had two shots with one on goal and the other hitting the post.

Maksimov tallied a game-high five shots and put three on goal for the Celts, while Lewis added three overall and two on frame.

Futch (4-4-1) allowed a goal while facing 10 shots, as she made nine saves in 78:09 minutes for St. Thomas. Jordan Thompson played the final 11:51 minutes and surrendered the lone goal that ended up being the difference.

The victory over St. Thomas avenges an earlier 3-0 loss last month in Houston, and the Crusaders claimed the important conference win in the rematch as they sit tied with Centenary for second place with 15 points in the league standings.

Prior to kickoff, Severson, Salazar, Gonzalez, and Duran were recognized as part of Senior Day.
