Mark Jedow came away impressed with his two squads at the end of dual competition against NCAA Division II UT-Permian Basin Saturday, Sept. 30.
The War Hawks claimed three event titles at the Monahans High School Natatorium. The women's team was led by the sophomore-freshman duo of
Caitlyn Sauer (Anthem, Ariz.) and
Isabella Trevino (San Antonio, Texas. Sauer hit the finish pad in 31.85 seconds in the 50-yard backstroke, and Trevino's 1:17.64 in the 100-yard breaststroke edged the Falcons' Chloe Siegrist by three-tenths in a dash for the wall. The men's headlines were centered around a first-through-third place sweep of the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore
Montgomery Cortez (Corpus Christi, Texas) (58.36 seconds), freshman
Aiden Wardy (El Paso, Texas) (1:04.37) and freshman
Kristopher Cantu (Harlingen, Texas) (1:05.7) turned in the performance.
"It was exciting to see how far we have come a team in the first couple weeks of the season as well being able to identify areas where we still need to address in our training and race preparation," Jedow noted. "I was very encouraged by our performances which for many of our returning swimmers were ahead of where they were last season at this juncture."
"I have never been one to worry about the dual meet score results in swimming, while victories are always nice to see in the won/loss column," he added. "I'm always keeping my eye on the end of the season and where we want to see these athletes at the SCAC Championships in February. "
McMurry begins its home schedule Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14, in dual action against Centenary College.
