The Emory University women's tennis program is headed back to the Elite Eight after defeating the Trinity Tigers, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The Eagles improve to 16-4 on the spring season with the win and will travel to St. Louis, Missouri for the quarterfinals. The Eagles have made it to the Elite Eight each season since 2008 with the exception of the 2020 season due to the season being cut short.
Starting in doubles, the Tigers were able to take the first match on court three with an 8-3 decision but senior Ana Cristina Perez and sophomore Emily Kantrovitz finished just one minute later on court one. After starting the match down 1-0, the duo went on a run to take their match with an 8-3 victory to tie the match at one apiece.
The tandem of junior Eliza McPherron and sophomore Iris Berman sealed the final doubles point for the Eagles with yet another 8-3 win on court two helping the Eagles to a 2-1 lead after doubles. The duo has now won eight of their last 10 doubles matches this season.
Perez got things started in singles on court two winning her match with a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set decision securing Emory's third point of the match. Another straight-set win came from freshman Yanire Marte on court six, her 11th singles win of the season. She finished her match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory for the Eagles' fourth point of the match.
Just a few minutes later, sophomore Izzy Antanavicius sealed the win for Emory with a 6-2, 6-4 decision in the No. 4 spot sending the Eagles to the Elite Eight.
Around the court, Kantrovitz was winning her final set 3-0 after going 2-6, 6-2 in her first two sets while senior Ilayda Baykan had won her first set 7-6 and was up 1-0 in the second set. Berman was also winning her match in the No. 5 spot with a 6-4, 2-0 decision before the match was ended.
The Eagles will face Wesleyan (CT) in the quarterfinals on Monday, May 20 with the time to be determined at a later date.
