Pirates Gear Up for Conference at Rebel Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Southwestern played six games over spring break at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida. The Pirates emerged with three wins while out-scoring their opponents 27-11.

SU opened the games with a big 7-0 win over Millikin University, posting five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Three Pirates, Amanda Ambrose, Kaitlyn Pavlicek and Haley Hughes all recorded two hits while Pavlicek drove in four of the seven runs for Southwestern. Lauren Zearfoss was untouchable on the mound, allowing just one hit through seven innings to earn the shutout.

Game two pitted the Pirates against Rowan University. Both teams were slow to start but Rowan posted four runs in the fourth on three Pirate errors. Southwestern responded with a two-run fifth but were held scoreless the rest of the way to fall 4-2. Pavlicek continued her strong play from the plate, going 2-4. Lyndsy Maus garnered the loss without allowing an earned run.

Southwestern kicked off day two with nationally-ranked Wisconsin River Falls. The Pirates struggled to get things rolling offensively while UWRF scored two runs in the fourth and one in the seventh to defeat SU 3-0. Four Pirates recorded hits in the game while Zearfoss suffered the loss.

The Pirates rebounded big time in their next contest, destroying Centenary College (NJ). It took just five innings for SU to secure the 10-0 run rule victory. Southwestern jumped on Centenary, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Abi O'Connor led the way offensively, going 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Maus earned the shutout victory while allowing just one hit on the afternoon.

Riding the momentum the Pirates sought revenge on Wisconsin-River Falls to start their final day of action. Southwestern maintained constant pressure on the Falcons with ten hits, scoring six runs including three in the sixth to post a 6-0 win. Jessica Bryant posted a 2-2 day at the plate with one run scored while Tessa Galloway went 2-3 with two RBI's. Zearfoss earned the shutout win, scattering three hits and striking out seven while walking none.

In the final game of the classic Southwestern faced Anderson College out of Indiana. The Pirates took an early two run lead after three innings, but a four run seventh by Anderson allowed AC to sneak the game out from under SU.

Southwestern moves to 10-11 on the year after going 3-3 on the week. They return home to open SCAC conference action this weekend, facing Austin College for a four-game series beginning with a double header at 1pm on Saturday.
