Celts cruise to 3-1 win at Johnson & Wales

DENVER – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas remained undefeated against NCAA Division III competition Friday after claiming a 3-1 win at Johnson & Wales (Colo.).

UST's Carlos Marquez (SR/El Paso, Texas) struck twice in the second half to give the Celts a comfortable three-goal lead as the minutes waned. A JWU goal in the 84th minute proved the match's final scoreline.

Andy Garcia (JR/Houston, Texas) gave the Celts an early lead when he struck for an unassisted goal less than seven minutes after the opening whistle. After the restart, Marquez gave the Celts a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute off a pass from Heiko Leinweber (SR/Cottbus, Germany).

Marquez added to his scoreline in the 79th minute when calmly put in a penalty kick after a Johnson & Wales foul.

UST goalkeeper Pedro Medrano (SO/Houston, Texas) made nine saves for the Celts in the match.

The Celts return to action Sunday when they visit Colorado College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT (noon locally).
