Henry Schuler Elevates Tigers over Centenary

Henry Schuler was a factor at both ends of the pitch Colorado College as maintained second place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 1-0 victory over Centenary College on a perfect fall afternoon at Stewart Field.

Playing every minute at center back for the 12th time this season, Schuler anchored the Tiger defense that did not allow a shot on goal for the second time this season.

The Gents produced just three total shots, which was the second fewest against CC this season. Schreiner managed two shots during Colorado College's 3-0 win in Kerrville on Sept. 23.

The beneficiary of the dominating defensive effort was Keller Mochel, who recorded his 10th clean sheet of the season. It marked the second time this season the junior goalkeeper did not need to make a save while posting a shutout.

While the Tigers were playing exceptional defense, the question became would someone step up and deliver in the offensive third.

Schuler provided the answer late in the 76th minute when he placed a header from the center of the box high inside of the left post for his second goal of the season and his first career game winner.

The deciding play began with senior forward Robert Malone lofting a pass to Will Mallory at the left edge of the box. The sophomore midfielder let the ball bounce once before sending a first-touch volley into the center of the box.

Schuler elevated between a pair of Centenary defenders and was able to place the ball over the outstretched hands of freshman goalkeeper Sami Borchalli.

"Henry Schuler continues to be a rock in the back for our team," head coach Scott Palguta said. "He turned in a real captain's performance today and got the all-important goal we needed. We really struggled to solve the packed Centenary defense through the run of play.

"We did play a very tight game defensively, though, which we will continue to need as we inch closer to the conference tournament in just two short weeks."

With the primary assist, Mallory now has factored in six game-winning goals this year, scoring three and setting up three more.

Malone, who ranks first on the team with six goals, is tied with Mallory for the team lead with 13 points.

During the opening minutes of the game, it appeared as if the Tigers would have no trouble finding the net after producing several dangerous scoring opportunities.

Borchalli made five saves for the Gents, including a diving stop on Samson Heyer's curling blast from the left side of the box in the 10th minute.

Colorado College nearly scored in the 11th minute, but senior defender Kennan Amer's header off a Mallory corner kick hit the center of the crossbar.

Borchalli also got some help from his back line, which blocked Mallory's shot from inside the top of the box after he settled a cross from sophomore midfielder Jackson Silverstein.

CC finished with a 22-3 advantage in total shots and a 12-5 edge in corner kicks.

Colorado College continues its four-game home stand on Friday, Oct. 26, when the Tigers play host to Trinity University at 7 p.m. on Washburn Field.
