GEORGETOWN, Texas – After playing 82 minutes of balanced
action on Sunday morning the Southwestern Pirates saw their upset
bid over Centre College slip away on a header to lose 1-0.
Southwestern falls to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference while
Centre improves to 11-3-1 and 5-1-1 in the SCAC.
A very balanced first half ended in a tie with both the Pirates and
Colonels taking five shots. SU had some solid shots on goal but
Centre’s keeper Arndt made a couple of great saves to keep
the game locked at zero. Thanks to the strong SU defense, Pirate
keeper sophomore Nick Pierce wasn’t challenged immensely in
the first half.
Southwestern’s best look was with just over two minutes
remaining. After a substitution brought senior Checo Carreon on the
field he drilled a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a
Centre defender forcing Arndt to make a diving save.
Early in the second half the Pirates had a couple of missed
opportunities where the ball trickled in front of the goal before
Centre cleared the threat. The first was on a corner kick by
first-year Will Toler that bounced a couple of times in front of
the goal and the other on a throw in by junior Alex Keller, but SU
wasn’t able to capitalize on either opportunity.
Centre took the lead in the 82nd minute on a crossing ball from
Bayse that found Hall at the near post who flicked it into the back
of the net to give the Colonel’s the 1-0 lead. It would turn
out to be the game winning goal and the only score of the
match.
Southwestern had 11 shots to Centre’s 15 while both teams had
five corner kicks. Pierce recorded six saves during the match while
Centre’s Arndt had four in the shutout win.
The Pirates will hit the road again on October 24th as they head to
San Antonio to take on conference rival Trinity at 7:30 pm.
