Southwestern sweeps doubleheader to claim series from Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Schreiner on Saturday to claim the series. The Pirates won the opening game 13-10 and then claimed a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

Southwestern (7-17, 3-3 SCAC) posted 24 hits in the two games. Will Cates led the way with five hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run.

Hayden Holley and Tyler Polasek both picked up victories on the mound.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, as the squad welcomes Texas-Dallas to Rockwell Field. First pitch for the non-conference tilt is slated for 6 p.m.


GAME ONE

Southwestern built a 13-6 lead through the first eight innings, but was forced to fight off a furious comeback attempt by the Mountaineers, who plated four runs in the final frame.

Schreiner out-hit the Pirates in the contest, 16-11.

Cates was a home run away from the cycle, as the senior outfielder tallied three hits in four at-bats. He also stole four bases, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Holley (1-3) came out of the bullpen and pitched four frames, scattering three hits and a run with two strikeouts to pick up his first win with the Pirates.


GAME TWO

Cates started the series finale with a home run to left-center field. Southwestern then pushed its lead to 6-0 after five innings.

The Mountaineers managed two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the Pirates took advantage of an error in the bottom of the frame to pick up the final run of the game.

Polasek (2-0) won his second straight start, as the freshman left-hander allowed only two runs in six stanzas.

Ben Little was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI ,while Cates, Robert Wehman and Ethan Widoff all had two hits. Ethan Hallmark also was 1-for-3 and drove in two.


SERIES NOTES

• Southwestern hit .339 (38-for-112) in the three-game series.
• Will Cates batted .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles, one triple, a homer and four RBIs in the set. He also slugged 1.143 and stole five bases in as many attempts.
• The Pirates stole 11 bases in 13 attempts against Schreiner.
Matt Litz made two relief appearances in the series, posting a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings of work with eight strikeouts.
Ethan Luna extended his hitting streak to seven games.
