
Southwestern dropped an SCAC double header Saturday against Trinity University. Southwestern falls to 15-15 on the season with the losses. Game one saw senior pitcher Chris Churchwell throw a gem but come up just short as the Pirates dropped the game 6-3. Churchwell threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up a tough 5 runs, just 3 earned. First year Max Smith came in and finished off the game in a solid 2/3 of an inning. Junior outfielder Cray Betts finished the game with 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Pirates.
Game 2 saw Cray Betts give the Pirates an early 3-0 lead on a blast into the left field trees in the second inning. However, the Tigers would answer with 3 runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings to take a 6-3 lead. The Pirates would make a final push in the 7th when Brett Martin drove in Cray Betts and Jay Sterling on a double down the right field line. Trinity would pull away for good with 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to put the game away. Brett Martin was 2-5 on the game, senior catcher Nick Ashford was 2 for 2 and Cray Betts was 2 for 3.
The Pirates fall to 15-15 on the season and 6-9 in conference. The Pirates and Tigers will finish their season series Sunday at 2 pm in San Antonio.
