Pirates Fall in Defensive Struggle

Pirates Fall in Defensive Struggle

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern's tough defense was on as the Pirates held Austin College to 25 points below their season average, but couldn't get the shots to fall as they dropped their ninth contest of the year Friday night.

Austin College took the lead early by releasing a player down the court and heaving the defensive rebound for the easy lay-in. Southwestern pulled within three points, 15-12, after Nick Atiee picked Jordan Hancock's pocket and scored the lay-up and one. Logan Hurley added a pair of free throws on a breakaway on the next possession to put Southwestern within one, 15-14 with 8:31 to go in the first half.

With a suffocating defensive presence SU was able to claw their way back in the contest and brought the game even, 23-23, at the half.

Southwestern wasn't able to find their offensive rhythm or get the kind bounce they needed as the 'Roos steadily pulled away to the eventual 60-42 final.

SU shot 31.9% from the floor, 20% from three point range and Logan Hurley led all scorers with 15 points. AC shot 46.2% from the field and 27.3% from long range in the win. The Pirates were -9 in rebounds and committed five more turnovers (17-12).

Southwestern continues the search for their first win of the season, moving to 0-9 on the year and 0-3 in the SCAC, as they host the University of Dallas on Saturday for another conference match. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
