Baseball Drops Series Opener To No. 24 Trinity

San Antonio, Texas – The Centenary baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to the No. 24 Trinity University Tigers on Friday night in the opener of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series at Trinity Baseball Field.

The series between the Diamond Gents (12-8, 4-3 SCAC) and the No. 24 (D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll) Tigers (14-9, 5-2 SCAC) wraps up on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 and 4 p.m.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings until Trinity DH Christian Holloway hit a solo home run for a 1-0 lead. Two more scoreless innings followed and then the Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 on a solo homer by 1B Brandon Nelson and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Trinity then added four in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-0 game. 3B Kai Tinker had an RBI single, Nelson scored on a passed ball, then Holloway delivered a two-run double. Centenary avoided the shutout by scoring twice in the eighth inning. Senior SS Noah Koehmstedt (San Diego, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly and freshman 1B Collin Pitts (Lufkin, Texas) had an RBI single.

The Diamond Gents were limited to just four hits, struck out 10 times, and made one error. Trinity had 11 hits, made one error, drew four walks, and only struck out six times. The Tigers left 11 on base. Centenary walked five times but struck out 10 times and left five on base.

All-American sophomore LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) was charged with the loss for Centenary as he went six innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits. Herrera (3-3) walked three, struck out five, and allowed the two home runs. He faced 32 batters, hitting one, and threw 108 pitches (69 strikes).

Freshman RHP Jacob Broussard (Houston, Texas) came in for Herrera and pitched an inning. He allowed two runs, both earned, on two hits with no walks or strikeouts. Broussard faced six batters, hitting one, and threw 28 pitches – 18 for strikes. Senior RHP Peyton Thibodeaux (Lake Arthur, La.) also went an inning and did not allow a hit or run with a walk and one K. He faced four batters, hit one, and threw 15 pitches (8 strikes).

Joseph Chavana (2-1) got he win for the Tigers as he went six innings and allowed just two hits with three walks and six K's. He faced 23 batters and threw 88 pitches (54 strikes). Jack Martinez pitched the final three innings to record his first save. He allowed the two runs, both earned, on two hits with two walks and four K's. He faced 13 batters, hit one, and threw 66 pitches (42 strikes).

Senior CF Gary Hewitt (Cedar Park, Texas) finished 1-4 with a double and a run scored at the top of the lineup for Centenary. Pitts was 1-3 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk. Freshman LF Lenny Forth (Flower Mound, Texas) was 1-3 and junior C Jake Gonce (Katy, Texas) had one hit. Holloway and Nelson combined to go 5-8 with four RBI, three runs scored, and two walks to pace the Tigers' offense.
