PIRATES GARNER FIRST LOSS OF SEASON, FALL TO UTT 2-1

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women’s soccer team was unable to capitalize on numerous second half opportunities and dropped their first contest of the season to the University of Texas-Tyler 2-1.

Southwestern got their first shot at goal on a corner by Lauren Kjolhede (pictured) that was played out of the box and spurted back to Laura Kromann who fired and missed left. Jillian Curran was fouled on a breakaway and gave the Pirates their second shot in just over a minute on an direct kick by Kjolhede that missed a foot right of the goal.

Tyler had many balls played through the SU defense that were just beyond the UTT streaking forwards and were secured by Pirate keeper Sarah Nonaka. The Patriot’s first real threat was on a line shot by Lauren Thomas that went straight to Nonaka who knocked it down and then reigned it in before UTT could make a follow-up shot.

The Pirate’s Kjolhede had another good shot on at the goal on a direct kick 20 yards out that sailed just high with nine minutes remaining in the half.

Tyler was able to get on the board first with just over three minutes remaining in the half when Analiz Median was fouled on the 18-yard line which resulted in a PK. Median stutter-stepped and placed the ball in the lower right hand corner to put UTT up 1-0.

Southwestern responded with a series of shots on the goal with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Laura Kromann’s shot ricocheted off the post and Cheryl Miller’s follow careened off the keeper. Amy Douglas followed with a shot of her own that was blocked by a Patriot defender who cleared it out of the box and halted the Pirate attack.

The Pirates started the second half with two corners and a shot from Danielle Madison 30 yards out that soared just high of the goal ten minutes in. Tyler had their opportunities as well, once on a corner and once on a breakaway that was stifled by the SU defense.

A.J. Andreola narrowly brought the game even on a header off of Kjolhede’s cornerkick that bounced off the crossbar. A sliding challenge by Jillian Curran on Tyler’s keeper spurted past Fraser, but Curran was unable to recover in time to put the goal in the net.

The Pirates evened the score when Curran dribbled past the Patriot defense and was able to sneak a ball into the lower left-hand corner to tie the game at 1-1.

UTT responded with a goal of their own, in less than a minute after SU scored, on deep penetration by Lauren Thomas that curved just out of Nonaka’s reach and into the goal to give the Patriots the 2-1 win.

Southwestern falls to 4-1 on the season while UT-Tyler improves to 2-2. The Pirates will hit the road once again on Saturday the 18th to take on the University of Dallas at 2:00 pm.
