CMS Men's Tennis Wraps Up Hawaii Trip with 8-1 Win over Trinity
HONOLULU, Hawaii - First-year Ian Freer and senior Nikolai Parodi won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and then earned singles wins as well to lead the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team to a win over No. 13 Trinity on Saturday at Punahou School. CMS concludes its three-match trip to Hawaii with a perfect 3-0 dual record, after defeating Pacific (Ore.) 8-1 and Hawaii Pacific 4-2 on Thursday and Friday. Trinity, meanwhile, slips to 1-2 on the year with the defeat.
CMS took a 2-1 lead into the singles, after senior Daniel Park and junior Casey Morris won at No. 3 doubles. Park finished the trip with a perfect 3-0 record in doubles, playing with three different partners, He also added a singles win at No. 6 on Saturday. Park was joined by Nic Meister, who played only seven points at No. 3 singles, before his opponent had to retire with a strained groin. Parodi then provided the clinch for the Stags with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win at the top spot against Trinity's Cam Krimbill. Parodi avenged a loss to Krimbill at the ITA West Regionals in the fall of 2018.
Leading 5-1, CMS added three more straight set wins at Nos 5, 4, and 2. Junior Robert Liu trailed 3-1 in the first set, but won the next five games and held on for a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Freer at No. 4 also came back, saving two set points at 4-5 and winning nine straight games en route to a 7-5, 6-2 decision. Katzman closed out the scoring for the Stags, winning in straight sets for the second time in as many days at the No. 2 position.
CMS returns to Claremont and will host its annual Ducey Cup Alumni Match on Saturday, January 25 at 9:00 AM. The Stags return to dual match action on February 8, hosting Hope International and Ottawa University Arizona.
