CONWAY, Ark. – Southwestern out-rebounded Hendrix College
42-33 and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds to defeat the Warriors
74-66 in SCAC conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates
improve to 10-4 on the year and 3-2 in the conference while Hendrix
falls to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.
The first half was a hotly contested one, seeing six ties and eight
lead changes in the first 20 minutes. SU went into the break down
by five points, 41-36, after Hendrix shot a blazing 56% from the
floor and 44.4% from beyond the arc.
Following halftime, HC built their lead up to seven, 45-38, but the
Pirates put together a 20-4 run over the next seven minutes to take
an eleven point lead, 60-49 with 10 minutes to play.
Hendrix brought the Pirate lead down to just five, 60-55, three
minutes later, but junior Jonathan Brown’s two lay-ups pushed
the lead back to nine and allowed Southwestern to cruise to a
victory by draining their free throws down the stretch.
The Pirates were led by senior Zach Bergstrom who posted a game
high 19 points. Brown added in 17 in 21 minutes. Junior Nick Caputo
was solid all around for Southwestern, scoring 10 points, pulling
down nine rebounds and dishing out six assists.
SU looks to continue their conference success by returning home for
two SCAC contests. The Pirates host Sewanee on Friday and
Oglethorpe on Saturday. Both games are slated to begin at 8:00 pm.
