Houska, Tigers Hang Tough Against Regis

Box Score Junior guard Eric Houska poured in a career-high 26 points and reached a career milestone with six assists, but Regis University overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to defeat Colorado College, 88-79, on Monday night at the Regis Fieldhouse.

The Tigers, who were playing their third game in four days, took a 35-23 lead when junior swingman Ryan Young knocked down a three-pointer with 6:02 remaining in the first half.

However, Kevin Metoyer scored nine points and dished out a pair of assists to ignite an 18-7 run that allowed the Division II Rangers to pull to within 42-41 after 20 minutes.

Regis took its first lead 14 seconds into the second half on a layup by Dexter Sienko, but CC stayed close and went ahead for the final time when Yiannis Margetis scored with 9:32 to play.

A dunk by junior forward John Hatch pulled the Tigers to within two with 6:17 remaining, however Regis answered with 10 consecutive points to open an 80-68 lead with just 2:43 to play.

Colorado College cut its deficit in half and pulled to within 83-77 on Houska's layup with 1:52 to play, but the Rangers closed out the game by scoring five of the last seven points.

Houska made eight of 15 shots from the floor and sank nine of 10 free-throw attempts.

With six assists, he became the 24th player in program history to record 150 or more. He currently ranks 22nd with 151.

Hatch finished with 16 points for CC, which slipped to 0-3. Junior forward Chris Martin added 10 points, while Young contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Metoyer led Regis with 24 points and nine assists.

Regis (4-0) got 17 points and seven rebounds from Sienko, as well as 10 points from Elijah Sanders.

The Tigers play at home for the first time this season when Augsburg College and Saint John's University visit Reid Arena on Friday and Saturday, respectively, for the 2016 Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic.
