For the second time in program history, the Colorado College volleyball team swept the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.
The fourth-ranked Tigers utilized double-digit kills from
Allie Freeburg,
Isabella Vasquez and
Georgia Mullins to post a 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 victory over No. 1 Trinity University in a battle of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titans on Friday afternoon at Reid Arena.
"It was a great win for this team and the program," head coach
Rick Swan said. "These young women have been committed, worked hard really, and made a statement tonight that they are one of the best teams in the country."
Freeburg and Vasquez pounded down 13 kills apiece, while Mullins finished with 10. Mullins, the reigning SCAC Offensive Player of the Week, hit .625 with no errors on 16 swings and had a hand in five blocked shots. Vasquez hit .381, while Freeburg finished at .320.
Senior setter
Isabelle Aragon-Menzel dished out 38 assists while leading the CC offense to a .282 team hitting percentage. She also finished with a match-high 18 digs.
Sophomore libero
Peyton Hummel was close behind with 17 digs to help the Tigers hold TU to a .126 percentage.
Colorado College trailed 6-1 early in the first set, but Freeburg produced five kills and a blocked shot during an 18-8 run that gave the Tigers a 19-14 lead. After a Trinity timeout, the teams traded side outs until CC closed out the set.
In the second set, Colorado College snapped a 15-15 tie with a 5-1 run that was capped by two kills from Mullins. TU trimmed its deficit to two points three times, only to see CC answer with kills by Vasquez, Freeburg and finally
Isabella Lipacis to take a two-set lead.
Trinity appeared to be ready to get back in the match when it took a 6-0 lead in set No. 3, and after Colorado College tied the score at 10-10, the Texas Tigers scored six in a row with Lexie Acevedo serving to grab the momentum. CC utilized a 9-2 run to take its first lead of the set at 19-18, then put the set away with a 6-3 surge that included two kills and a block by Mullins and kill from Vasquez on match point.
"It was fun to watch and I couldn't be more proud," Swan said. "We are looking forward to playing Trinity again and know tomorrow's rematch will be another battle."
Colorado College's first victory over the top-ranked team in the country occurred on Sept. 16, 2017, when the Tigers defeated Calvin College 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 at the Elmhurst Invitational. The Tigers entered that match ranked No. 5.

Isabella Lipacis finished with nine kills and four digs.
Trinity Standouts
Annie Rose Leggett had eight kills and a team-high nine digs.
Avery Tuggle finished with eight kills and seven digs.
