UST men's tennis team eases past Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas improved to 2-1 in their inaugural men's tennis season Saturday with a decisive 7-2 victory at Schreiner.

UST won five out of the six singles matches and took two of the three doubles matches from the host Mountaineers.

Juanrodrigo Lopez and Quashi "Ayo" Philips teamed up to win their flight one doubles competition by a score of 8-5 over Schreiner's Luis Cabreja and Austin Cervantes. An 8-5 UST victory also occurred in flight three, where Michael Hopkins and Tyler Head put away Schreiner's Jack Johns and Chris Corbett.

In singles play, all five UST victories came in straight sets. Lopez took his flight one match from Cabreja by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. In flight three, Hopkins narrowly defeated Schreiner's Carson Kirk 6-4, 6-4.

Flight four saw Philips put away Schreiner's Mario Gallinar 6-3, 6-0. UST's Jace Ware secured an easy win over William Ueckert in flight five by identical 6-1 scores. In flight six, Head claimed the win for UST with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Johns.

UST's Race Haas gave a strong showing in flight two, which ultimately went to Schreiner's Matthew Jimenez in a tiebreaker. Jimenez won 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.

The Celts were scheduled to visit Concordia Texas in Austin on Sunday, but that match was postponed due to rain.

UST returns to action Saturday, Feb. 22, when they will kick off a three-match trip to Abilene, with two matches on Saturday. The first match is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Feb. 22 at Hardin-Simmons.
