GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern baseball team dropped this afternoon's non-conference game with the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs by a score of 6-3 at Rockwell Field.
The Pirates started strong, scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the third to take a two run lead. However, the Bulldogs rallied for three in the fourth, led by a pair of doubles by catcher Evan Curtis and first baseman Jason McGill. TLU then followed with two in the fifth on McGill's homerun to left to take control of the game. After the fifth both bullpens took over with neither team allowing a run the rest of the way.
Offensively the Pirates were led by shortstop Charlie Garrett, second baseman Nate Shipp, and first baseman Brett Martin who each had two hits. Martin and designated hitter Patrick Keenan each contributed an RBI.
Bulldogs' starter Brad Orosey lasted only two innings allowing five hits and three runs. He was aided however by five relievers who combined to throw seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits and walking three while striking out 12.
The Pirates bullpen was also strong, particularly Aaron Garza (pictured) and Alan Lowry who pitched a combined four shutout innings allowing only three hits. Starter Chris Webber went three innings and allowed five hits and three runs, only two of which were earned. He was relieved in the fourth by Jason Stading who pitched two innings allowing two hits and three runs, but only one earned.
This afternoon's game was Veteran's Appreciation Day sponsored by Carl's Jr. at Rockwell Field. Veterans from the all branches of the military were honored throughout the game, including the tossing of the ceremonial first pitch.
The Pirates will return to the field this weekend for a home series against Trinity starting on Saturday March 5th at 2:00 PM.
