CC Rallies to Take First Place In SCAC

Box Score Sophomore midfielder Tim Huettel struck for a pair of goals as the Colorado College men's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Southwestern University, 3-1, on Friday night.

The Tigers improved to 5-1-2 overall with their fourth consecutive victory and are alone in first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-1 mark.

Freshman forward Jake Swonke gave the hosts their only lead in the 15th minute, but after that it was nearly all CC.

Huettel leveled the score a little more than 16 minutes later when he beat SU sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Benner off a touch from freshman midfielder Robert Malone.

With just 1:25 remaining before halftime, Max Grossenbacher gave Colorado College the lead when he converted on a penalty kick. It proved to be his first game winner of the season and fifth of his career.

The senior captain improved to 2-for-2 on the season and 5-for-6 for his career from the spot.

The Tigers tacked on an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Grossenbacher slipped a ball along the goal line to Huettel who was unmarked on the right side.

Sophomore goalkeeper Theo Hooker finished with one save as CC extended its unbeaten streak to five games.

Grossenbacher nearly added a second tally, but his shot 1:12 into the second half went off the post.

The Tigers finished with a 19-9 advantage in total shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

CC's defense held its opponent to five or fewer shots on goal for the sixth time in eight games.

Benner stopped four shots for the Pirates, who slipped to 2-7-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.

Colorado College visits Texas Lutheran University for a conference match on Sunday.
