No. 5 Bulldogs Cruise by Dallas in Doubleheader Sweep

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team dropped two games to No. 5 Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon. In Game One both team were feeling each other out through the first three innings, as pitching shut down the opponents. The Bulldogs grabbed three runs in the fourth and never looked back. UD had opportunities, but were unable to convert. TLU put up six more runs in the eight to take the decisive win.

In Game Two TLU put up three early runs in the second. Dallas answered in the third with a single run and held the Bulldogs close through four innings. TLU then went on a tear as they scored 15 runs in the final three innings to sweep the doubleheader.

Dallas had a scoring opportunity to open the game in the first innings when Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) reached base and made his way to third. Unfortunately he was left stranded on base. TLU got their offense started when they got runners on the corners with one out. Cullen Motsinger and Spencer Brandt singled in back-to-back plate appearances to bring across two runs. Blade Strzelczyk brought in another run with a sacrifice bunt. TLU brought across another run in the fifth.

UD got two runners in scoring position in its half of the fifth but a pickoff and a strikeout ended that chance. Spencer Brandt drove in another TLU run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Both teams threatened in the seventh, but key pitching got out of that inning. The Bulldogs then surged in the eighth when they notched a six-run inning to put the game out of hand.

Tyler Cauley led TLU with three hits, two runs scored, and two RBI. Joe Jimenez grabbed two hits and two runs scored.

Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) had a two hits to lead UD. Abalos, Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas), Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho), and Andrew Womack (Vienna, Va.) all had a hit each. Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) matched a season-high seven innings and secured his longest outing in a conference game. Voss also had four strikeouts and only allowed one walk.

Cameron Wilson blasted a homerun over the left field fence to put TLU up early. Austin Colon notched an RBI to add to the three-run inning. Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave UD its first run on the day in the bottom of the third when his sacrifice fly drove in Abalos. After shutting down the TLU bats in the fourth, UD was unable to push anything across in their half. The Bulldogs then rallied with two outs. Strzelczyk singled in two runs with a singled to left center. Motsinger then came around to score to add to the Bulldogs lead. TLU put up six runs in the sixth and seventh to take the day sweep.

Strzelczyk had four hits on five trips to the plate, scoring four runs and driving in four RBI to lead the Bulldogs. Jimenez added a three-hit game with two RBI. Cole Irby also had four RBI.

Malinovsky pitched the complete game, allowing six hits and just one earned run with eight strikeouts.

Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) led the Crusaders with two hits in three plate appearances with a stolen base. Abalos also swiped a base. Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas), Tyler Montemayor (Boerne, Texas), and Kyle Neel (Houston, Texas) all pitched for Dallas.
