Tigers Prevail In Showdown with CMS

Box Score Alena Stern stopped a season-high 13 shots and Lauren Pejza struck twice in a span of 34 seconds late in the second half to lead No. 24 Colorado College to a 12-10 victory over No. 25 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on a cool Sunday afternoon at Zinda Field.

The Tigers improved to 3-0 overall and now have the inside track to the top spot in the West Region rankings.

Stern made a pair saves on free position shots in the second half, the last of which occurred with 1:47 to play when she denied Allie Hill's effort that could have cut into CC's 12-9 lead.

Stern reached double figures midway through the second half when she stopped Maddie Geary's free-position shot, giving the sophomore goalkeeper her first double-digit performance of the season and the eighth of her career.

Neither team led by more than one until Colorado College grabbed a 10-8 lead with 8:19 remaining on back-to-back goals by junior attacker Allie Thuet and freshman midfielder Molly Dibble.

Alex Futterman cut CC's lead in half with 5:33 to play, but Pejza gave the Tigers some breathing room when she converted off feeds from senior midfielder Ellie Meyer and Thuet.

Futterman scored again with 61 seconds remaining, but Meyer won the final draw control and Colorado College successfully ran out the clock.

Thuet led Tigers with a career-high seven points and matched her best of four goals set during last year's 19-8 victory at Cabrini University.

Colorado College also got a pair of markers from Pejza and freshman attacker Bella Beattie, whose second goal tied the game at 6-6 while CC was down a player early in the second half.

The Tigers led 5-4 after Meyer struck for an unassisted marker with 8:42 remaining in the second half, but goals by Sammie Cohen and Blaire Southmayd just 25 seconds apart gave the Athenas the halftime lead.

Colorado College won the battle for ground balls, 30-28, while CMS produced a 13-11 edge in draw controls.

The Athenas finished with a 31-27 advantage in total shots.

Corrie Hack led CMS with four goals and five points. Her final tally leveled the score at 8-8 with 13:38 to play in the game.

Anna Gillespie stopped eight shots for the Athenas, who slipped to 5-1.

Colorado College plays the first of three consecutive home games on Wednesday, March 13, against Worcester State University.
