Gents Blanked By St. Thomas 2-0 On Friday

Shreveport- The Centenary men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the St. Thomas Celts on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Mayo Field.

The Gents, playing at home for the first time in almost three weeks, were facing the Celts for the first time since the two met this past April in the 2020 SCAC Championship match at Mayo Field when the Gents edged the Celts in PK's last to win the tournament title. Centenary fell to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play with Friday's loss and the Maroon and White have lost six games in a row and have been shut out in the last four.

Centenary, despite the loss, is still 14-6-3 in its last 23 home matches. The Gents are 3-2 at Mayo Field this season. The Celts improved to 6-2-2 and 2-0 in SCAC play. The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half until St. Thomas found the net twice in the second half to secure the victory.

The Celts took the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute as Ian Alvarez struck the ball past Centenary senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) with the assist credited to Fabian Delgado. St. Thomas added a second goal just nine minutes later as Gabe Salako gathered a deflected shot by Andres Marquez following a save by Borchalli and stuck it in the net.

The Celts were aggressive all evening and finished with a decided edge in shots (17-7) including a 9-2 margin in the first half. St. Thomas also took five corner kicks to just one for the Gents and the teams combined for 32 fouls, 20 by the Celts, and six yellow cards were issued. Borchalli played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves. St. Thomas GK Rodrigo Lazo earned the shutout and made four saves of his own.

Centenary will face LeTourneau in a non-conference match in Longview, Texas on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Gents are then back home for three-straight matches versus Southwestern (Oct. 15), Texas Lutheran (Oct. 17) and Colorado College (Oct. 22) for their final home match on Senior Night.
