Men's Soccer Defeats TLU in Overtime

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS -- The Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team defeated the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in a non-conference preseason match between two SCAC teams, getting a penalty kick goal from Seth Holzmann in overtime to win 2-1.

Southwestern took the lead early and seemed to dominate the first half. With Jack Adams' beautiful technical ability to chip the ball over one defender and slide the ball past TLU goalie Caleb Weed for the first goal of the match in the 32nd minute.

A couple of minutes later, Bulldog Lalo Lopez-Rivera took down a Pirate just outside of the box, which earned him the first yellow card of the game. Unfortunately the Pirates could not convert, slamming the ball into the chest of a Bulldog in the wall.

The Bulldogs took control in the second with more aggressive plays and quicker passes. Texas Lutheran controlled possession for almost the entirety of the second half. Their lone goal of the match came on a cross from Mitchell Long to Abram Mendez in the 68th minute to tie the game.

The overtime period only lasted about four minutes before Lalo Lopex-Rivera took down a Pirate inside the box, earning his second yellow of the contest and a penalty kick for Southwestern. Seth Holzmann stepped up and powered the ball into the back of the net, left of Weed.

  • Jack Adams was very impressive with his technical skill inside Southwestern's attacking third.

  • Ashton Bynum was a point of distribution for almost every all of the Southwestern possessions. He dominated in TLU's side of the pitch.

  • Seth Holzmann's heart was left out on the pitch tonight. Holzmann was all over the place and seemed to have the most touches of all Pirates. Holzmann also had the calmness to step up to the Penalty Spot and win the match.

The Southwestern Pirates will resume action on Friday, Sep. 20 against Johnson & Wales University (Denver) at 8:00 p.m.
