GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates men's basketball team grabbed a close score win over the Colorado College Tigers 74-70 in the Corbin J. Robertson Center.

Brandon Alexander was the high scorer for the Pirates, contributing 24 points, eight rebounds and one assist. Trenton Garrett also helped the Pirates by going 6-6 for free throws and 5-6 from the perimeter, putting up 16 points and 10 rebounds.

At the start of the game, both the Pirates and Tigers battled back and forth with each team pulling ahead by no more than three-to-four points. However, the Tigers did pull a significant lead with Cooxooeii Black putting up 14 points and Aaron Acosta contributing 10 more points, and the Tigers held a nine-point lead with two minutes left in half. But in those two minutes Garrett, Kyle Poerschke and Calvin Williams were able to draw fouls to sink five free throws and end the half 37-35.

Going into the second half, the Pirate defense kept the Tigers to two points for the first five minutes which allowed the offense to catch up and gain the lead. Southwestern kept drawing fouls to keep their lead over the Tigers, giving momentum to a Pirate offense that controlled the game with confidence. With Alexander putting up 11 more points, Garrett going 4-4 from the free-throw line and a spirited Calvin Williams slamming a dunk that set the crowd ablaze, the Southwestern Pirates sealed a much-needed win for their season.

Up next, the Pirates will play their last home and 2019-20 season game Saturday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. before possibly attending the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) conference championships.
