Inconsistent Bats Keep Pirates from Championship Game

Inconsistent Bats Keep Pirates from Championship Game

The Southwestern softball team faced a long, tough day of action on Saturday afternoon and were ultimately defeated out of the SCAC Conference Tournament one game shy of the championship game.

With their first game postponed due to weather the Pirates were in for a long day of softball as they opened competition on Saturday morning against Trinity. In an uncharacteristically low scoring game the Tigers were the first on the board with one run in the third and then an SU error allowed another across the plate in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Southwestern was only able to score one on a homerun by Abigail O'Connor in the sixth and left one runner stranded in the seventh to fall 2-1.

The Pirates returned to their old selves as they faced Millsaps College in the loser's bracket, scoring in all but one inning for the 8-0 run rule win to move on. Tessa Galloway (pictured) led the way in the game going 3-3 with two RBI's and three runs scored.

Centre proved to be no match for the Pirates in their third game of the day as Southwestern bolted out of the gate and posted six runs in the first inning and closed out the contest for the 11-5 win. Kayla Irvin had a monsterous game going 3-5 with two runs scored and five RBI's including two homeruns.

The win pitted the Pirates against Trinity once again after the Tigers fell to DePauw earlier in the day. SU just didn't have the answer for the feisty Tigers as they posted two runs in the first, one more than Southwestern to start the game.

Trinity's defense went on lock down as Southwestern wasn't able to push another across the plate and led to the 7-1 loss for the Pirates, pushing them out of the tournament.

Galloway led the way at the plate all weekend, going 7-13 with three doubles, one homerun, two RBI's and four runs scored. Taylor Turpin was right on her heals with a 7-14 weekend with five runs scored. Galloway, Turpin and Irvin were all selected to the SCAC Softball All-Tournament Team for their efforts.

On the mound Lauren Zearfoss went 1-2 while Lyndsy Maus went 1-0 as they split duty during the tournament.

After the weekend Southwestern sits at 29-15 on the year and on the bubble for the NCAA Regionals. They will have to wait to learn their fate as the selection committee does not announce the selections until May 2nd.
