CC falls at top-ranked Trinity

Box Score Senior goalkeeper Brian Graf recorded a season-high six saves, but Colorado College dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 1 Trinity University on Sunday afternoon.

“I'm really proud of the way our guys played,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “Trinity is a very good side and we're getting closer.”

Victor Araujo's tally in the 34th minute proved to be the difference in the game. The sophomore midfielder's bullet from 30 yards out was perfectly placed to where there was nothing Graf could do to keep it out of the net.

CC held Trinity to one goal for only the second time this season.

Colorado College nearly scored the equalizer in the closing minutes of the game.

TU sophomore goaltender Matt Cardone made a diving save on a senior forward Daniel Wright's shot in the 84th minute, getting just enough of the ball to send it inches outside the post.

With two minutes to go, senior forward Matt Fechter's shot was deflected over the crossbar and sophomore defender Eric Sowers' effort in the final five seconds was denied by Cardone.

Trinity outshot Colorado College by a 21-8 count, but the differential in shots on goal was only 7-3.

CC slipped to 6-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity improved to 8-0-1 and 2-0-0 in conference play. The teams play again on Oct. 19 in Colorado Springs.

“Despite today's loss, this was a good weekend for us,” Richardson said. “We're looking forward to playing them again at altitude.”

Colorado College returns home next weekend to play host to the University of Dallas on Friday afternoon and Elmhurst College on Sunday.
